VAMOS NEWSPAPER ! !

A ripening of social conditions, numerous motivated people, have "sparked off" a chemistry so that Vamos proudly presents its first issue of "PRINOS", a publication of the Cultural Society of Vamos (bi-lingual, English-Greek). The people of the Society aspire "PRINOS" to be a show case of all the fresh ideas and proposals that will tend to the common good of Vamos and its area, a meeting point where the Cultural Society meets the society. The vision is certainly ambitious but in any case it worth it!

Grape Harvest and Raki Distilling

September and October in Crete, like in many other areas, is related with grapes stories.

This year in Artemis vineyard we will harvest and treat the grapes, and learn lots of small secret recipes of must (grape syrup). While the rest of the grape (pomaces), after three four weeks of fermentation will be ready for raki distilling, which will take place in taverna Tzitifia.

Summer in Vamos was full of music, poetry, theater, exhibitions and more ! ! !

ROSS DALY Concert
At Vamos amphitheatre on Sunday 17 July the amphitheatre of Vamos was filled to the brim with people who had come to enjoy Ross Daly's art. And he, a tireless explorer of music, payed them back with a full two-hour program. Leaning more to his "Cretan" side, he nevertheless did not neglect to demonstrate his interpretations of the music of the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East, just as he has been doing for almost 40 years now, forever a pioneer and right up to date. A very high standard of art! The quintet that gave us this extraordinary music comprised Ross Daly (lyra), Kely Thoma (lyra), Yiorgis Manolakis (lute), Miles Jay (double bass), Yiannis Papatzanis (percussion) Thank you!

NIKOS GATSOS
On Monday 8/8 the Cultural Society of Vamos organized a tribute to the poet Nikos Gatsos, because of the 100th anniversary of his birth. It was an
excellent evening! In the beginning the well known philologist Roula Vouraki made an introduction to his poetry, which brought up the very important work of this poet, who showed off a precious Hellenism so necessary today! A 9 member band played songs written on his poetry, composed by some of the most important Greek composers, such as Hadjidakis, Theodorakis, Xarchakos, Moutsis, Kilaidonis... The musicians were: Takis Karnezis (bouzouki),
Dimitria Sevastou (flute), Edmond Aleksi (violin), Leonidas Maridakis (guitar, vocals), Dora Beleri (vocals), Stelios Saroglou (piano), Antonis Hadabis (drums), Yiorgos Limakis (bass), Nikos Fragiadakis (keyboards) and Gerasimos Verykakis of course who supported Mrs. Vouraki at her presentation and who sung the Xilouris' songs. The idea to make the whole concert at the yard of the Old School was absolutely correct. It was something amazing to watch the performance in between the slightly lightened chapel of St. George and the Old School of Vamos, under the moon of August! The big crowd (the yard was totally full) and the enthusiasm of the audience proved how successful the evening was!

CRETE-ANDALUCIA
On Friday 12 August Vamos amphitheatre was once again packed tight with people. On stage Zacharis Spyridakis (lyra), Dimitris Koukoulitakis (flamenco guitar) and Yiannis Papatzanis (percussion) exchanged musical ideas, feelings, techniques, cultures and passion. All of them are excellent virtuosos, but the most important message of their collaboration is that people with different starting points and different experiences, when they show respect, understanding and a will to co-operate, can achieve things which previously seemed inconceivable. Isabela Galeou was our flamenco dancer. Thanks to all of them!

A JOURNEY TO THE NEIGHBORHOOD OF DREAMS
Short stories by great artists were told to us by the creators of the performance which took place in the yard of the Old School in Vamos on Friday 19th August. Although these Greek artists are no longer alive, their work still inspires and guides us all. Cinema clips from the career of Veggos, shadow theatre as tribute to Spatharis by Nikos Blazakis, the music of Loizos-Hadjidakis-Sougioul-Kouyioumtzis-Tsitsanis by a nine-piece band, plus the poetry of Elytis combined with the music of Theodorakis. Visual images created by Dimitris Thanos were on screen the whole time, bringing back to our hearts and memories these great Greeks, who we badly need as positive examples, especially during these difficult times. Watching the awarding of the Nobel Prize for Literature to Odysseas Elytis in 1979 reminded us what our precious homeland can achieve when we have the will. A most appropriate message! The musicians on this occasion were: Vassilis Mouloudis (bouzouki), Dimitria Sevastou (flute, vocals), Edmond Aleksi (violin), Leonidas Maridakis (guitar, vocals), Dora Beleri (vocals), Stelios Saroglou (piano), Antonis Hadabis (drums), Elias Lyberopoulos (bass) and Nikos Fragiadakis (keyboards). Dimitris and Fryni danced both tango and waltz. The narrator was Yiannis Makris. Great moments in
Vamos again! And which drew a very touching response from the people!
