The history of Vamos goes back many centuries. According to historical sources its first inhabitants were Arab pirates around the 8th century. To the general census organized by the Venetians in 1573, Vamos is mentioned as "Vamu" with 271 permanent inhabitants.

Kalyves

It is a beautiful village by the sea of Souda bay. A small river crosses the area and by its sides there are plenty of hotels, rooms to let, restaurants and coffee shops, souvenirs shops. The beach, extending for 300 m., just before the entrance of the village is of golden sand with green-blue waters. From Kalives driving towards the national road and following the sign to Megala Chorafia, is Aptera, having prehistorical, ancient and roman ruins with nice sea view. This is a interesting spot and one of the most important archeological sights of Chania area. A must, for those who are interested in history and archeology.

• west to Georgioupoli river, there is Kalivaki beach, protected form the wind, and driving east 1 km after the river and ugly hotels, more quiet parts on the long sandy beach), 10km

Leaving Chania Airport, drive along 500 metres, then left at first junction following signs to Rethimno until you reach the National Highway (E75). Follow the highway for approximately 17 kms at the "Kalami Kalives" sign, turn left off the highway. Drive parallel with the sea shore, passing through Kalives town, for approximately 5 km. At the end of the road you will see on your right the sign of "Vamos Health Centre 6km". Follow this road, slightly on the right for 6 kms. First you will meet two gas stations (1 on the left and 1 on the right). After approximately 200 metres you will see a sign on the left for Kefalas 5 km and Vamos Health Center, there is a taverna on the right side, named BLOUMOSIFIS. Turn right there and the Vamos Traditional Village TOURIST OFFICE is approximately 50m along this road, on the right. You will meet Elena or Klio who will take you to your accommodation.

Follow the National Highway towards Heraklion. The highway bypasses Heraklion and continues all the way to Chania, bypassing Rethimnon on the way. After the interchange in Rethimnon, continue on the highway for approximately 18 km, and then turn right to Georgioupolis (to exit from highway).

Drive through Georgioupolis, over the river, and continue straight (you will see the signs.) In approximately 10 km you reach Vamos. Follow the downhill road, pass the village square with the traditional cafe and grocery store, until you find on the left hand a tavern, with a big tree, named BLOUMOSIFIS. Just before the tavern, you turn left and in about 50m, on the right side, is the Vamos Traditional Village TOURIST OFFICE, near the art cafe Liakoto.

The region of Apokoronas is located in the north-eastern part of Chania prefecture and extends from the foothills of the Lefka Ori (White Mountains) until the Almirida and Kalives bay.

Vamos village:
Vamos village is in the center of Apokoronas. It is a semi-mountainous village, in 200 meters altimeter above sea level, surrounded by cultivated and wild nature, with 800 inhabitants and very good customer services. There are super markets, bakery, grocery stores, a county court, post-office, bank, telephone company, police station, health centre and two petrol stations.
